Every spring, beginning around Valentines Day,
those of us living in the Platte Valley of Nebraska
are privileged to witness the annual return of several hundred thousand Sandhill
Cranes returning to the
sloughs and meadows of the area. For thousands
of years, the birds have returned here for a stay
of about a month while they gain strength and health for the trip to the far
north and breeding season.
Their trumpeting calls and dancing displays are part of their bonding rituals,
but they represent
an ancient celebration of the beginning of spring, and new life.
